The renovation of Piața Sfatului in Brașov is a unique opportunity to complete the beneficial transformation of the Citadel center that has been under way in the last years. It's centrality in both urban terms and social value makes Piața Sfatului a gathering place where many different activities for Brașov’s citizens and visitors alike occur throughout the year. Our proposal addresses these issues straightforwardly. It provides a harmonious solution that facilitates multiple and diverse uses, which gives back to Piața Sfatului its social and historical splendor.

The space of the square is formed by its architectural fronts, and it should reach from façade to façade. Our proposal incorporates the façades on Strada Mureșenilor, enlarging the sidewalk in front, redefining and reducing the car lanes, and encouraging a continuity of uses with the rest of Piața Sfatului. The paving pattern resonates with the shapes of the façades, and reaches out to all its boundaries. By this operation, we enlarge the perception of Piața Sfatului from limit to limit and achieve a unified enclave. Its texture, flow and color harmonize with the façades and historical context of the square, in order to enhance their value.

Maximum versatility and accessibility of Piața Sfatului are of paramount importance. We defined a continuous pavement without barriers that adapts to the existing topographical levels of the façades and provides universal accessibility. Many different uses and activities are thus facilitated by this continuity.

Following our proposal, Piața Sfatului becomes a central point connected with the rest of the Citadel and beyond. We believe that Piața Sfatului must however have a differentiated character to mark its importance within the urban tissue: it is a referential point that simultaneously stands out and reconnects the old center, acknowledging the flows that constitute the vitality of this part of Brașov.

Water is a key element of Piața Sfatului and provides a new focus of interest through the design of its Magic Fountain. We envision the incorporation of water in the square as a playful element that can have different configurations and that can become an attraction in itself. This Magic Fountain springs from the ground at different places, its jets can be regulated to different heights and shapes, and can be used either as a refreshing and lively everyday venue or as a monumental and highlighted icon for special occasions.
