Nursery Decor Ideas | How to design a creative Universe for children

Designing a child's room can be both exciting and challenging. To create a space that is at the same time functional, fun, aesthetically pleasing & educational, it is important to take into consideration multi design strategies.

When it comes to proportions, it is important to keep in mind that children's rooms should be scaled to their size; furniture should be appropriately sized, with the bed, desk, and chairs being comfortable for the child to use. Additionally, it is important to leave enough open space for the child to play and move around.

As for design ideas, there are plenty of options to consider. One popular approach is to choose a theme that reflects the child's interests or personality. This could involve incorporating colors, patterns, or decor that are related to a favorite hobby, animal, or sport.

Another design idea is to create zones within the room. This can be done by arranging furniture to create distinct areas for sleeping, playing, and studying. This approach can help the child feel more organized and focused, and can also make the room feel more spacious. When it comes to storage, it is important to have enough space for the child's belongings. This can be achieved by incorporating shelves, drawers, and cabinets into the design, or by using multi-functional furniture that doubles as storage.

Finally, it is important to involve the child in the design process. This can help them feel more ownership over the space, and can also lead to a more personalized and enjoyable room. Overall, designing a child's room requires careful consideration of proportions and design ideas that best suit the child's needs and preferences. With some creativity and planning, it is possible to create a space that is both practical and fun.

Below are listed a series of key points to take into consideration, but do keep everything simple; this should be over the top, just a buildable space where your kid can grow and learn about the world:

  • 1/ Take natural light into consideration then you place the crib/bed - this will help them regulate their sleeping patterns;

  • 2/ Incorporate play areas and if you have space use small chairs and a small table from them to use by themselves or with friends/guests;

  • 3/ If the space allows it, create an area for them where they can sleep somewhere else than a bed - as an 'unfinished space' maybe like a tent or a bed made out of pillows from the decide how and when to use it - the act of having transformable spaces in their rooms is a fun way to involve them into the design process, learning about the space around them;

  • 3/ Use natural textures and patterns, regardless of colors, to stimulate your child’s brain and creating an engaging and interesting environment;

  • 4/ Think about colors - since their room is their Universe, their safe place to grow, you can start with a buildable color palette and, as they grow, they can just opt for different styles;

  • 5/ Incorporate wall art that will inspire them - whatever you choose is what the child will look at on a regular basis;

  • 6/ If the space allows it, include a reading corner by adding a comfortable chair or bean bag, along with a bookshelf or storage area for books;

As in any other interior design projects, the recommendation is to work with an architect/ interior designer, but as a parent or teacher it is also important to understand the psychology behind the design as this is a team's effort in order to enhance a stronger involvement and attachment for the kids to the spaces created by professional designers.

Regarding motives and themes, incorporating quotes, animals and the natural world in their space will help them understand the world around them better. In addition, for children, owning an animal not only can be exciting and fun, but it can also be educational and beneficial to their overall development. Since the children’s bedroom is their Universe, is important to incorporate this aspect in their lives.

Caring for an animal teaches children about responsibility, compassion, and empathy. It helps them develop a sense of nurturing and increases their self-esteem as they take on the role of a caretaker.

Pets can also be great companions for children, providing unconditional love and emotional support. They can help children feel less lonely and give them a sense of security. For children who struggle with anxiety or other emotional issues, pets can be a source of comfort and help them feel more calm and relaxed.
